Hello The Lab at the MCA Denver! That’s right, and it’s kinda old news. You see, Adam Lerner was recently selected as the new director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver.

You know Adam. He’s the boss-man over at (the soon to be closed) Laboratory of Art and Ideas at Belmar. Who do you think overseesall those sweet Mixed Taste lectures and bad ass installations? Mr. Lerner does, thats’ who.

And now we’re gonna get his muscle behind the MCA Denver. But what exactly is that going to mean?

Well for starters, The Lab has to close. Its last day of operation will be April 26, 2009, (following a Gallery Talk the previous night with curator Michelle Baldwin and artist Andrew Novick – chatting about the current exhibition The Astounding Problem of Andrew Novick). After the 26th all of The Lab’s programming and events will take place at MCA Denver.

Beginning May 1st members of The Lab with receive comparable memberships to MCA Denver, so don’t worry ’bout getting cut out of any art culture, mmmmkay?

All of this and more will be covered at the MCA Denver 13th Annual Meeting. Memebers can get an earful on Tuesday, April 21st, from 5:00 – 6:45 pm. There will be a cash bar and members reception for the first thirty minutes, before they get to the nitty-gritty of the night.

If you’re a member and intend to attend RSVP micheller[at]mcadenver.org or call (303) 298-7554.

Otherwise, we’d all better get over to the Belmar before it becomes a Disney Store or something.

For more info: Read Adam’s letter to The Lab here, and then the MCA Denver has a nice note as well.

Colorado Springs brings out some big art guns, in defense of it’s point that Denver isn’t the only town with art culture.

Case in point: Gallery Talks, presented by Pikes Peak Community College.

I’m not sure how long this most awesome program has been in place, but I am already a fan. Basically, the current artists displaying in the gallery are invited to speak about their inspiration, concept, and construction. They may even answer questions from the audience. Come and hear insights from the artists involved in the innovative and unique artistic expressions exhibited in the current installation exhibit: Stratified Senses and Sensualities. Artists include Lorelei Beckstrom, De Lane Bredvik, Timothy C. Flood, Jay Miller, Kat Tudor and Bob Tudor, and Business of Arts collaborators.

The Talks are scheduled for both Thrusday and Friday night, and following the event the work is scheduled to be dismanted, making room for the next exhibit. So if you find yourself in The Springs, head on down and see the sights.

Stratified Senses and Sensualities
Thursday, April 2nd and Friday, April 3rd
5:00pm – 6:30pm

Hey whadda’know, it’s First Friday already!

I’ll be taking advantage of the weather’s spring-time personality disorder, especially since you know we’re in for a massive blizzard style dumping in the near future. So head out tonight and get some culture.

If you’ve never been to the First Friday Art Walk, then man are you missing out. Basically galleries all over the city open their doors, offer up beer and wine (sometimes), and turn a good portion of the city into a mobile cocktail art party. It’s a blast; great for dates; turns our little cow-town into a well-oiled art machine.

Santa Fe Drive from 5th to 10th is considered the main drag, although there are plenty of independent galleries all over the city participating. But if you do plan on heading down to the Art District tonight let me prepare you for one thing that’ll put a damper on the night: PARKING.

This area had minimal street parking and tonight it’ll be pedestrian heavy. So do yourself a favor and take advantage of these secret parking places. Oh and don’t tell anyone, cause I need a parking place too.

First Friday Free Shuttle:
Wha? A free shuttle. Youbetcha! The shuttle with the big orange dot will take you to 9th and Santa Fe where you can begin the great art shuffle. Runs from 6:00 – 9:00pm departing from the Osage Light Rail station and West High School parking lot.

Kitchens at the Denver:
8th and Kalamath. These awesome people will let you park in their lot for First Friday Art Walk only. Don’t test them and don’t ruin it for the rest of us.

Alliance Francaise:
6th and Galapago. Same goes for these nice people.

West High School:
10th Avenue and Galapago. Typically guarded by a memeber of the West High School Student Council, a small donation (who do you think all those Bush era tax cuts hit the most?) will secure a well guarded short walk (2 blocks) or shuttle service jaunt to the festivities.

Hope to see you all out there, I’ll be the guy with the glass of wine wearing black. You can’t miss me.

For more info: Check out the Arts District website, or if you need some google map love: check this.

Tonight, February 12th at Redline, help to celebrate the launch of the much awaited local, community generated, design annual.

You don’t know Illiterate? Well its:

the new home of illiterate’s hybrid arts community where local and world renowned artists and writers come together on equal footing to participate in the creation of the small square magazine that puts Colorado’s arts scene on a pedestal.

The scandalous event begins at 5:30 with a Gala/Fundraiser with all proceedes supporting the magazine and its related endeavors.

There will be libations. There will be hors deurves. There will be passionate performances to satisfy the varied taste of even the most discerning patron. Be dazzled by lascivious fashion theater created by 10 of Denver’s most luscious designers , be wooed by spoken word poetry and swoon to the tunes of live jazz by Pink Hawks and Spanish guitar by Mhamed El Menjra. Admire and acquire art in a silent auction curated by RedLine’s own artist in residence Travis Egedy. As the night’s official master of ceremonies, Denver’s ambassador-at-large, Sid Pink, will move the evening along in style and give audience members the chance to get more intimately acquainted with illiterate, RedLine and the personalities behind these two creative incubators.

The party really starts to rock at 10:00, when:

Josephine & the Mousepeople, Paper Bird and Kingdom of Magic will bring home the Love to Hate theme with live musical performances, and DJs PicturePlane, Bobby Collins and Mu$a will pump the good vibrations throughout the night. An encore performance of the Affair’s fashion theater show will surely leave all in attendance breathless. For those in attendance still scrounging for that heartfelt expression of Valentine affection or anguish, Denver’s resident craft experts at Fancy Tiger, will be there to guide even the most clumsy thumbed through Cupid’s Holiday with a Love to Hate craft room.

Damn, this is surly the place to be tonight. Tickets for the gala are $30 at the door and include admission to the website launch party. If you’d only like to attend the launch party, then tickets are $12 at the door – unless you bring in a small piece of art or text that expresses your thoughts on Love and Hate, in which case it’s only $10.
